Laser Hair Removal and Tattoos – Is It Safe?

Laser hair removal is very safe if you have tattoos. However, the laser hair removal can only be done on the areas around the tattoos or in other areas of the body. Laser hair removal can never be done over a tattoo.

Why can’t laser hair removal be done over a tattoo?

Laser machines for hair reduction are designed to target pigmentation in the hair follicle. The laser hair reduction machines cannot distinguish where this pigment is located. This means if the laser hair reduction machine runs over a tattoo, the laser will attack the pigment in the tattoo, resulting in burnt or blistered skin, meaning laser hair removal and tattoos where the laser runs over tattoos is a huge no go.

Why use a white pencil?

Laser therapists will map out areas on the body using a white pencil. Similarly, the therapist will mark out tattoos with a white pencil. Why is it? The white pencil not only indicates each section, but it doesn’t attract the laser. If a laser therapist were to use a black or darker pencil, the laser would be drawn to the pigment. However, a white pencil doesn’t, meaning your tattoos are safer from the laser.

Can you get laser hair removal before having a tattoo?

Yes! If you are going to get laser hair removal and you also plan on getting a tattoo, make sure you plan to get your tattoo after your laser hair removal. Keep in mind that laser hair removal usually takes 6-8 sessions, so be sure to plan ahead and talk to your therapist during your consutation.
